We all know that the students love prom, but what about the chaperones?

Prom: The Adult Perspective

Prom is a time for all seniors and juniors to get together for one last hurrah before many leave for college. A lot of planning goes into that one night so that everything goes perfectly. It is obvious that the students enjoy prom night, but what about the chaperones? Some of the chaperone’s were asked a series of questions about the night of prom. The answers might be surprising.

Some of the teachers and administration were asked what their favorite part of being a chaperone was and a lot of them responded, like Mr. Maaske who said  “It was just fun to see people come in excited and having fun. People looked so nice. Overall it was a neat evening.” Although he did say “the music was really loud.”

Mr. Develice said how his favorite part is “seeing the kids dressed up and happy; which is different from how they are in class sometimes” but he did not like “if there were issues.”

Mrs. Hall explained how her favorite thing about being chaperone was “definitely watching everyone come in.” When asked her least favorite thing about the night, she responded with: “sitting around waiting on a Saturday to go to St. Paul and work. I’ve gone 26 times, 26 years. I hate the parking ramp too.” Overall though, she thought that prom was “great, and fun for the kids.”

When we asked what the students think of a prom that their parents or grandparents attended to compared to the ones they go to, they thought “big dresses with more modest and classy dancing and music. It’s not as formal as it would have been back then” said Bri Wesloh (11), but when we asked the adults to compare we got answers like Mrs. Hall’s where she said: “I don’t think it was as expensive and not as big of a deal when people asked other people to go. We kept it pretty simple.”

This is similar to what Mr. Develice said which was how “It’s a lot more elegant now; too much of a big deal maybe. Asking people to prom was elaborate almost like a marriage proposal.” Mr. Maaske explained how it was different because of the diversity. He said: “I love the diversity; the different dresses and what they wore.”

Students had a very different idea than adults of what prom was like back then. Students would normally think the music, dancing, and clothing style would be different. Whereas most of the teachers never even mentioned those things. It seems that overall, the students and also the teachers enjoy prom. It is definitely a night to remember.
