Pep Troubles?

Being in high school, and attending a lot of the different sporting events usually means sitting in the student section and cheering on our different athletic teams with tons of school pride.. But what if I told you that our student section and school pride was being out cheered?

At the boys varsity hockey game on Wednesday, February 26th, our boys came out with a victory over the Anoka Tornadoes. During most of our game, the Centennial Cougar student section was arriving, ready and completely Hawaiian decked out, which was there theme. This was crazy to see and witness. A whole entire section in the Coliseum at the State Fair Grounds was completely full of the Cougar students. Their outfits went from hula girls to boys in board shorts, and trust me, they were all ready to show their school pride to the entire Coliseum. Their cheers were extremely loud and on point, which intimidated me, and some of the other students in the Blaine student section. Tonight, February 28th is the section semi-finals for these boys, which is a huge game against the Centennial Cougars. Personally I am just a little bit worried of being out cheered and looking like we have not very much school pride.

In past years, we have had huge attendance for the Blaine students (pictured with togas above). So why aren’t there many students attending these games this year? First of all, a lot of the underclassmen don’t have rides since they can not drive, and they don’t really feel like having their parents bring them and dropping them off because that’s not very efficient and timely, and for some maybe a little bit embarrassing. Another reason many students may not be attending could be because they’ve just never been to a hockey game, and they don’t have friends that go or they do not know anyone on the team.. But trust me, there are a lot of students that do attend and we need to step up our pep game. During the football, volleyball and other school sports, Blaine had quite a big student section and had many people attend and not just watch, but cheer quite loudly. Maybe if the weather was better and the road conditions were not as bad, students would attend in larger crowds.

The big game tonight is very important and a make or break game. If the boys win, they will proceed on to the state tournament which will be the first time in a quite a few years. Or, in the case of a loss the boys will be done. These boys have worked their butts off and they will not go out without a fight. This game should be a pretty good one, and definitely worth the six bucks it costs to get in. So don’t be afraid to come out of your nice warm house and sit in a cold ice arena for about two hours.. Trust me it will be worth it. Oh, and don’t forget to bring your school spirit and your willingness to cheer.
