Are E-Cigs Becoming More Popular At School?

E-Cigarettes were introduced into the United States market in 2007 to create a healthier (if there is even a healthier) alternative to smoking Tobacco. E-Cigarettes offer a nicotine addictive substance instead of a Tobacco addictive substance, but when this product came into the market little did they know of the secret harms to E-Cigarettes.

Since E-Cigarettes are not tobacco based they do not follow the tobacco laws which require you to show proof of age when purchasing a tobacco related substance. This makes it very easy for high school kids to purchase E-Cigarettes. Have you noticed all of the E-Cig cafe’s popping up around town? All of these cafe’s make it easier and more accessible for high school students to purchase these electronic cigarettes.

Blaine High School has always said they offer a safe and healthy environment for their students. Lets think about that. Many students at Blaine High School carry E-Cigarettes with them to class, smoke it during passing time, and even smoke it when the teacher is not looking. The school officer Tim Evans said “I catch people a lot with E-Cigarettes. I wouldn’t say that the problem with E-Cigarettes is getting out of hand at Blaine high school, but I would say that many people need to think before they act.” When these people exhale the E-Cigarette they are not only creating a harmful environment for the people around them, they are creating a harmful environment for the people trying to learn and focus in school.

A study done by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention show that 1 out of 10 high school students have smoked an E-Cigarette. Altogether 1.78 million high school students and middle school students nationwide use E-Cigarettes. Two other initial studies have found that the second hand smoke produced from the smoker can be harmful to the body. Chemicals released include, formaldehyde, benzene, and tobacco specific nitrosamines.

In today’s world teenagers live in a society full of peer pressure. They think that if their friends are doing it they should do it to, but did you ever stop and take a look at the risks with trying E-Cigarettes?
