Road to the Championship

The Blaine Girls High School varsity hockey team ended the season great. They finished number one in the Northwest Suburban conference. This is the first time since 2005 that they finished on top. This was a huge goal accomplished by the team since it had only been done a few times prior to this year. But trust me, the girls had way bigger and better goals in mind, and they were ready to go out and make their dreams come true. They had won their last regular season game with a score of five to one favoring them, verses Centennial on Saturday, February 1st. Sections were just around the corner and the girls were very excited.

Their first opponent in the section playoffs was Rogers. The girls had not played Rogers yet this season, but the girls were very anxious and excited to play. The game took place last Saturday, February 8th. The team came out at the end with a huge win, 7 to 0 over Rogers. Senior forward Amy Schlagel scored four goals in this game. Also senior Kiersten Falck scored two, and senior Samantha Swanstrom scored once. The girls had a great start to section playoffs, and would proceed to round two, the section semi finals.

The team had just one practice in between the quarterfinal and semifinal, but trust me they were definitely ready for this.  This semi final game took place on February 11th, just a few days after the section quarter finals. The girls next opponent was Centennial, whom they had just beat ten days prior. Again, the team came out with a win, 4 to 1 over the Cougars. The girls had come out on top once again and could not be happier that their season was going to continue at least for a few more days.

After the huge win over Centennial, the team has moved on to the section 5AA championship game. This battle will take place on Friday, February 14th at the Roseville Arena. The girls’ next opponent is Mounds View, whom they have not yet challenged this season. This game will bring back plenty of memories, for the girls played Mounds View in the championship just a few years back. This game will determine whether the girls will move on to the State Tournament, which is their goal. The girls are prepared for whatever comes at them and whoever will challenge them. Whatever the outcome of this game will be, I know the team will not go out without a fight. So come out and cheer on the girls this Valentine’s Day, and help them accomplish their goal of the Minnesota State Tournament!!!
