Matthew Dereck, senior at Blaine

From the nicely pressed Kakis, to the shirts buttoned up to his neck, Matthew Dereck is one of a kind. Dereck has left his mark on Blaine as one of the lucky few to have earned the prestigious 36 on his ACT. Most people associate Matthew Dereck with good grades and perfect test scores but he is so much more than that. When I sat down for an interview with Matthew I asked him, “what is the one thing people don’t know about you?”

Matthew was quick to answer; he explained that most people would never know that he is an avid outdoorsman. In the summer Matthew works at a summer camp where he is in charge of teaching canoeing. Matthew says he also enjoys kayaking and hiking, and no one would know but, most of all, Matthew enjoys home improvement projects

Matthew’s face lit up as he told me about his courageous feat against the crappy plumping (pun intended) in his cabin. Matthew explained to me that the toilet at his cabin never works. So every summer when the family goes up there Matthew is always in charge of cleaning out the pipes.

Matthew laughed at the stupidity of the previous owners, “They cemented the pipes together and wired the water heater to the power line, they were silly.” One summer the cabin was in such bad shape that the whole cabin had to be replummed. Matthew was the hero that day. His small stature and narrow shoulders allowed him to crawl into tight spaces.  Matthew saved the day.

So the next time your toilet is clogged or you need something fixed, just call on Matthew Dereck.
