The Tiger Takeout program has only been around for three years at BHS but the program is already seeing a tremendous amount of success. The program, run by multicultural adviser Cassidy Pohl and school social worker Robin Burge-Ross is a small food shelf at BHS for Blaine students and their families. The shelf contains anything necessary for day-to-day life, such as meals and toiletries.

Burge-Ross said one of the biggest benefits of Tiger Takeout is that “it is confidential.” Both staff members explained that you don’t have to be homeless to receive support, “All [you] have to do is just let someone know.” The Tiger Takeout currently feeds two to ten families a week, Pohl said, “It’s available to anyone who just needs a little extra help.” Students needing some assistance can talk to their counselor or drop by Ms. Burge-Ross’s office located in the IMC.

Right now the food shelf is in transition from one location in the school to another, but despite the difficult move Pohl said, “We are so appreciative of all the Blaine student groups.” Groups such as National Honor Society and various athletics help gather food for the program. The food shelf is currently running low on items such as snack foods, pancake mix, and cereal. Donating food is as simple as dropping it off in a box in the front office.

As of December, Chain Of Lakes Church has partnered with the Tiger Take Out food shelf to help homeless youth. Burge-Ross said, “They want to get connected and help homeless families here.” Burge-Ross was thrilled at how much this church as done to help out, “They have been amazing.” So far, the church has donated food baskets, gift cards, spring break meal bags, and monetary donations which have been spent on gas and grocery gift cards. On April 13th from 9:00-10:00 AM the Chain of Lakes Church will be continuing its support by hosting a breakfast at the Da Vinci Academy. Tickets to this event sell for $8 a person and $20 for a family. The proceeds will all be donated back to the food shelf at BHS.

Whether you need some supplies, want to give back to the community, or just want some breakfast, the Tiger Takeout is an excellent place to start.
