Once On This Island – Review

Sara Ho and Chufue Yang

The lights flick on in the green room and the stillness is quickly taken over with excitement. The vivid sound of light hearted conversations and laughter glide into the room as cast and crew members enter for the 5 o’clock call time. Playwright Lynn Ahrens centers the musically filled story Once on This Island, around a poor peasant girl named Ti Moune, from an island where rivers run deep with jewels and gods as well as goddesses control the land. The story is also filled with love, strength and hope. This rendition of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet takes on all new twists and turns, but will most definitely leave the audience in awe.

During the show intermission, Principle Phelps said “Oh, I love it, what else can I say? We have so much talent in this school and the people out there are just showing it so well, I love it, it’s going wonderfully.” He then turned the question on me and asked what I thought of the show! Personally, I thought that everyone on stage, were indeed talented. They were all pitch perfect singers, graceful dancers, and moving actors and actresses. My friends and I were whispering and laughing during the whole show. We just had so much to say about the show and the actors and actresses of our school! The storyline was one thing, but I would have to say it was the characters we followed all along. We had gods and goddesses, as well as, the peasants and the wealthy. The leads of the play had so much emotion and really told the story from beginning to end.

During the show, there were some technical difficulties with some of the microphones, but we found out why after the show. The sound system they had was dying. If there were any other screw ups, I did not see them. Everybody seemed confident on stage, and the hours and hours of rehearsing every night showed.

The theatre program ended off the year with big smiles and lots of hugs all around. Students of Blaine High School, put your hands together for Once on This Island 2015.
