We were blown away, not just by the wind, but by the sportsmanship and excitement of the matches. We talked to some of the spectators watching this JV tennis game and what we got back was amazing.

Pam Steinhoff, a physical education teacher here at Blaine said, “It’s fantastic, I wish more people would come, this is my first chance to see the JV and C squad, all the other matches I’ve been watching. I love it. They have a good work ethic and we get to see all the pay-offs put together in a game situation and today fighting this wind and weather elements.”

Just being able to talk to Pam Steinhoff really opened our eyes to what goes on before they hit the courts. What people do to watch these games really gives you a laid back feel. You sit on a bench with a blanket and a cup of Joe; it’s a really comfortable environment to be in.

Every single player on the court was giving it there all and making the best out of the time and weather. Players were constantly hitting the ball back and forth and they seemed  very focused. Even the opposing team would go out of their way to hand a loose ball back to the other players.

Steinhoff said, “I’ve had a lot of these boys in class I know that they are just a nice, nice group of young men and I can see that with their sportsmanship and I can see that in the way they interact with their opponents and it’s a neat event to watch.”

We even got the chance to talk to the opposing team members, Carter Ho (7) who said “[The match] could’ve been better.” his friend Prosper Jibunor (7) added, “It was awesome.” They commented on Blaine sportsmanship: Prosper said,”they were so nice,” and Carter, “He gave me a ball when I lost my ball.”

It’s not rocket science to realize that it is not always about winning, it is about work ethic and being able to have good sportsmanship. Carter added “Yeah, I want to find the guy who I was playing against, so he can teach me how to serve.”
