Tips for Handling Awkward Social Situations

The BHS Blueprint offers pointers to help you navigate out of any awkward social situation. Whether you just called somebody by the wrong name or are forced to make small talk with someone who doesn’t like you, these tips are sure to help.
- Diffuse the situation with a deafening blast from an air horn
- Change the subject to a discussion of the morality of capital punishment
- Call the situation “yummy” and walk away
- Jingle your keys in front of their face
- Assert your dominance by dabbing on them
- If you don’t know what to say, call your mom and ask for advice
- Try to work the word “thick” into the conversation as much as possible
- Start singing. Songs you could sing include “Help!” by the Beatles, “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley, or “Hello” by Adele
- Criticize their bone structure
- Offer them a moist sandwich
- Cry
- Start bragging about how socially adept you are
- Try to start a new conversation but mumble all the words
- Tell them you believe in astrology
- Start saying slang terms you don’t know the meaning of, such as, “cool” and “the bee’s knees”
- If all else fails, break out the finger guns
