Welcome to the first installment of the BHS Blueprint’s new weekly “Food For Thought” article, which we simply talk about a random “Shower Thought” found on this subreddit: https://xz.reddit.com/r/Showerthoughts/

The thought we are talking about today is:

If Vampires Die When They’re Exposed To Sunlight, and Moonlight is Just Reflected Sunlight, Wouldn’t Moonlight At Least Slow Them Down?

Now, first, let’s figure just how much of the sun’s rays are reflected by the moon. According to the always trustworthy LiveScience.com, the moon only reflects 3-12% of the sun’s energy depending on its rotation around the earth. Most vampires in popular culture are vulnerable to sunlight (excluding Twilight of course) and some types die if exposed too long. The amount of reflected sun should make them at least feel a slight tingle, right?

Well, night and the moon have always been symbols for the supernatural, and it is commonly believed that both these forces have their own occult influence on the earth. So, if Vampires are affected by the moon’s rays, then something the moon and the night exerts must dim their vulnerability to it.

Also in shows like “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” and to an extent “True Blood”, vampires can temporarily exist in the shade during the day. This means they have a higher tolerance to the sun, but again, with so many variations of the classic vampire, it’s hard to solve this question. This is the beauty of Food For Thought, we aren’t solving, but simply talking about it.

The Blueprint Consensus: “The moon is a separate entity and, while it reflects the sun, it also emits a supernatural force of its own. Our other reason is that vampires are just tough creatures that live with a mild burn in the middle of the night.
