I read most of the books, saw the movie that came out in 2013, and fell in love with characters before I heard that ABC Family, now FreeForm, was making a show just for the series. I was excited beyond belief, and so was my friend, and we wouldn’t stop talking about it. We were that excited, till we finally watched the first episode.

Shadowhunters, a new show that premiered January 12, 2016 on FreeForm was the talk of the month between all of the “City of Bones” fans who were ecstatic to finally see all that they have been reading on screen, and it was just as exciting to those who had never read the books, but had seen the trailer. Then the show was played, and the thoughts running through my mind were a jumbled mess.

Katherine McNamara, Dominic Sherwood, Emeraude Toubia, Matthew Daddario, and Alberto Rosende were all the right people for the job. They’ve read the books, got the look that many had hoped for, and knew what they were doing. In the first episode sparked different emotions, in not only myself, but in others. The way the director perceived the emotions of the characters was off in my opinion, but I loved how he added twists and turns in the episode, as to also confuse the readers, and not only the people who are watching the show because they saw the trailers. He added more characters, changed the scenes, and made different connections, between different characters.

Kathrine was the image of Clary’s character. She showed the feelings of any teenager, and that caused the audience to connect with her at a deeper level, but as her life turned upside down, everything changed. It was like she just stopped showing any emotion, and the only emotion she had was a snarky one that didn’t really make sense in the situation she was in. Her mom had just been taken, the person she saw as her father said that he was using her to get closer to her mother, and get the Mortal cup everyone was after. In the episode, she meets Jace(Dominic Sherwood) and the rest of the gang, but doesn’t get along with them, mostly because of the front Alec(Matthew Daddario) puts up. The “front” he put up came off a little too strong, which causes many to hate him, when in truth, we should feel bad for him. His character is all over the place, an emotional hurricane, that so many people can connect with. In the show, it doesn’t seem that way.

The episode did a good job displaying connections, and laying a bases for everyone to build a connection to the show itself, and understand what’s going on. Something that confused many though was the warlock named Dot. Dot was Clary’s friend, who had helped her escape when people, known as the circle, broke into her apartment to kidnap her. She also makes another appearance later on as a demon, and many people didn’t realize, that the demon shapeshifted to look like Dot, and that it wasn’t actually her.

Rotten Tomatoes gave the show a 46% rating, do you think their rating is justified?
