2016 PGA Tour Season Preview

Rickie Fowler hits his tee shot on hole 17 during the final round of the 2015 Player’s Championship

The 2016 PGA Tour season certainly looks to be one of the best seasons ever.  There are more young stars on the tour than ever, which was proven by the fact that five out of the first six tournaments this season were won by first-time winners.  The number of great names who have a legitimate shot at winning a major this year is staggering.  Here are just a few to think about:

Jordan Spieth.  Spieth had one of the greatest seasons ever last year, winning the Masters, US Open, and FedEx Cup.  He also finished in fourth and second at the British Open and PGA Championship.  He started 2016 phenomenally, winning the Hyundai Tournament of Champions by 8 shots.  I can’t imagine that he won’t be a major contender this year.

Rickie Fowler.  Fowler broke through in 2015, winning the Players Championship and Deutsche Bank Championship for his second and third PGA Tour wins.  The only thing that Fowler doesn’t have yet is a major championship, although his clutch play down the stretch during his last two victories indicates that he has the head to win one.

Jason Day.  Last year’s PGA champion won five tournaments in 2015, and could’ve gotten into a playoff for the British Open if not for a putt that came up one foot short.  At the time of this writing, Day is number two in the world, according to the Official World Rankings.

Rory McIlroy.  McIlroy is only 26, but he has already won four majors.  He had a good season last year, winning twice and coming in fourth at the Masters.  McIlroy is only one Masters away from a career Grand Slam, or winning every major in a career.  He is currently ranked number three in the world.

Of course, those aren’t the only people who could have a great year.  That list is seemingly endless.  It includes Bubba Watson, Jason Dufner, Zach Johnson, Adam Scott, Justin Rose, Thongchai Jaidee,  Louis Oosthuizen, Keegan Bradley, Robert Streb, Kevin Kisner, Paul Casey, and about fifty others.

So, who will win the four majors?  I predict that there will be a three-way playoff for the Master’s between Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, and Louis Oosthuizen, which will be won by Bubba.  Spieth will win the US Open by several strokes.  Rory McIlroy will win the British Open by a stroke or two, and Rickie Fowler will win the PGA Championship in a playoff with Henrik Stenson.

Of course, those predictions will never come true, but whatever happens is bound to be exciting.
