Coin-Gate? Speculation of a Not So Ordinary Playoff Controversy
January 20, 2016
At the end of regulation in an insane battle between the Green Bay Packers and the Arizona Cardinals in the second round of the playoffs last Saturday, the score was tied at 20 apiece, and the captains mozied their way to center field to witness the coin flip, determining who was to receive the Overtime kickoff, a huge advantage toward winning the game. Yet when the coin was tossed by the head referee, it did not flip, not even once. The Green Bay captains, including Aaron Rodgers, who had called tails, got extremely upset when they saw the coin idle in the air and land on heads without a single flip. The ref did flip the coin again, but regardless of Green Bay’s second chance, it landed on heads again, giving Arizona the ball.
Many Green Bay fans can be seen ranting on twitter and other social media about how the toss was rigged, but it all comes down to the fact that Arizona scored in OT, and the Packers defense couldn’t stop them when it counted the most. No matter how much they try to scapegoat the ref or the Cardinals, the fact is that the Packers lost, when it’s all said and done.
Aaron Rodgers, in a post game interview, expressed his frustration that he never got a chance to touch the ball in overtime (due to its sudden death nature). It is safe to say that the coin toss did determine the outcome of that came, for in Green Bay had won it, chances are that Aaron would have led them down to field to score (again). No one is doubting Rodgers ability any longer, as he threw 2 hail mary’s (one on 4th & 20 on their own 3 yard line), and the other (on the very NEXT play) from roughly mid field to the end zone to tie the game with 0:00 seconds left, but now we know that there’s only so much that, even Aaron, can do to carry a team.Instead of moving on to play the NFC championship game against Carolina, the cheese heads will pack their bags and head home, empty handed.
