Divergent: The Key to Avoid Government Control

Divergent: The Key to Avoid Government Control

Taylor Borgman, Guest Writer

Despite Divergent’s dull, grey, and depressing scenery of broken down buildings destroyed by a previous war, Veronica Roth’s plot keeps teens entertained.  We follow Tris Prior through her exciting, emotional journey filled with mental and physical challenges that not only chain you to the screen, but also build a deep admiration for the main character.

The movie is set in a futuristic dystopian society where people are brought up in one of five factions, which value one, distinct quality, and so they are brainwashed to only have that one, distinct quality.  This allows the government to control society and keep peace, therefore, ending all war.  Teenagers must take a test resulting in which faction they belong.  Tris takes this test and receives a rare result, putting her life in danger.  She is a divergent, meaning she belongs to more than one faction, and the governing faction is threatened by her kind as they are not able to control divergents.

Tris chooses a dangerous faction where she meets Four, another divergent.  Through out the movie there is obvious chemistry between Four and Tris as they work together to become stronger and learn to hide their gifts.  Their connection conjures up the perfect romance, and adding the action packed scenes only makes it better.

Dauntless, meaning fearless, is the faction Tris left her family for, thus beginning the physical and mental hardship making Tris stronger.  This is where a deep admiration is built for the main character.  Dauntless leader Eric takes no ease on Tris and her peers, but despite his cruel punishments and threats Tris takes no time to rise up against him.  Fear doesn’t hold Tris back, in fact, it winds her up; feeling that obligated to demolish her fears is honorable.

Towards the end of the movie Tris and Four discover one of the factions plans on taking control of all other factions due to divergents corrupting the government’s control.  This is when both Tris and Four’s gifts are really put to the test.  They must sacrifice themselves, fearlessly, to overturn the government and save the ones they love.

I would rate this movie a 7/10 for it’s original, fascinating plot filled with suspense, action, romance, emotional hardship, and the main character’s admirable characteristics.  Anyone who wants to be inspired to conquer their fears or maybe just overturn a government, I would highly recommend this film.
