February 4, 2015
The future is unpredictable; nobody knows what will happen or what to expect.
What will the future look like. Will it be high-tech and everything will be easy? Will the future be dystopian? Will the government become Authoritarian and controlling?
The future is normally seen as a better place with technology advancements that make the aspect of everyday life easier to accomplish. In the past three years futuristic movies have come out and the setting took place in a dystopian society with a government that has a tight control over the citizens.
The movie Divergent took place in a dystopian Chicago, and the society is split into five factions that applies a single characteristic to all aspects of their lives. The factions are: Abnegation (selfless), Erudite (intelligent), Dauntless (brave), Amity (serene), and Candor (honest). Once the citizens in this society turn sixteen he or she chooses a faction that they will live in for the rest of their lives, the citizens take an aptitude test to help them make a choice of which faction would be right for them.
The movie follows a sixteen year old girl Beatrice Prior (Shailene Woodley) who was a part of the Abnegation faction. During Beatrice’s aptitude test her proctor can to the conclusion that she represents all of the characteristics which is called Divergent. The proctor warns Beatrice to not tell anyone that she is a Divergent and if the government found out she would be in great danger because the government views divergent as a threat.
At the choosing ceremony the teenagers choose the faction that he or she wants to become apart of, Beatrice chose Dauntless, and changes her name to Tris. After the choosing ceremony the new inductees have to be go through initiation that involves multiple competitions. The people with the least amount of points will be kicked out of the faction and become factionless. During the initiation process Tris made some friend, enemies and becomes attracted to her leader Four (Theo James) who is also a Divergent. Tris makes it to the end of initiation and realizes that leaders of two of the factions plotted an enforcement of an arm regime. The leader of the regime is Jeanine Matthew (Kate Winslet) the leader of the Erudite faction.
Tris and the other Divergents are targeted for suppression. They are seen as a threat to the society because it is harder for the government to have order and control over the Divergents. This movie there was a cultural trend of an unpleasant futuristic dystopian society that has been split up into multiple groups, and has a controlling Authoritarian government. Also two or more characters start a revolution. In Divergent Tris and Four start a revolution by acting against the government’s regime of trying to suppress the divergents and controlling the other citizens. These have been common themes and trends in other recent movies like The Hunger Games Series and The Maze Runner.
