Women Aren’t Funny, Movie Review
January 27, 2015
Do you think women are funny? This is the question that has surrounded the world of comedy for decades. The popular television show Saturday Night Live saw a major resurgent ever since Tina Fey started writing for the show, but the debate on whether women are funny or not, still exist.
Women Aren’t Funny isn’t a teen’s average movie, but it’s worth watching. In this documentary comedian and filmmaker Bonnie McFarlane goes on a quest to find out if women are really funny or not. From interviewing average people on the street to famous comedians on their shows, McFarlane and her comedian husband Rich Vos share their experiences together and apart trying to find the answer.

Chelsea Peretti, Joan Rivers, Jerry Lewis and Wanda Sykes are just a handful of well known comedians that show up throughout the movie, giving their own opinion and thoughts on women comedians.
Not only does this documentary explore what people think about how funny women are, it explains the difference between male and female comedians. The movie also has hilarious skits and sketches from New York’s Gotham Comedy Club, Comedy Central and the Last Comic Standing.
Women Aren’t Funny isn’t just for women, it’s for anyone who wants a good laugh. It can at times though be very vulgar and insensitive. “Comedy isn’t based on kindness its the bare truth,” says the stand-up comedian Sarah Silverman in the movie. Words put perfectly to describe some of the content of this movie.
Overall, Women Aren’t Funny proved itself to be a hilarious documentary. Unlike the assumption that all documentaries are boring, this one is filled with many laughs and great jokes from a variety of comedians. My challenge to you is to try and sit through this movie without laughing and find out for yourself if the title is just ironic or the truth.
