The Year of the Snowdays

The Year of the Snowdays

This year, the winter weather have not been kind. In these past few years, this is the year when Minnesota experienced sub-zero temperatures, freezing windshield that can causes frostbite within a few minutes.

Most Southern states got a few inches of snow and icy roads that suspended them for weeks. If Southern states experienced snow, the Northern states got even more brutal weather. This year might be the year of the most canceled school days in these past few years. So far as we’re reaching the end of the second Trimester, there has been so many school days being canceled by the superintendent or governor. The question that is in almost everyone’s mind right now, will the school year get extended?

The answer, is still unconfirmed. Principal Phelps have said, “There is always a chance to extend the school year. How many more school days are going to get canceled?”

But, the principal also added, “As of right now there is no plan to extend.” There are enough school days to balance out what needs to be covered in the school year.

In the interview with the principal, I asked him when does he know if the school was going to be closed for that day or not. He replied, “about 2 minutes before everyone else does.” Principal Phelps would learn these information from the early morning news or the school’s secretary would alert him. The most likely reason the school would close is if the National Weather Service issues a “Wind Chill Warning” or combining the air temperature and wind speed to determine how long a person can be outside before getting frostbite.

Since there is a chance of the school year not getting extended, what about the Trimesters? Will we be able to cover all the lessons before the finals that are soon approaching?

Teachers can’t teach every single thing there is in the world. Teachers can only teach so much but with all these canceled days, the teachers have a tougher job of reorganize all their lessons to teach before the finals. Principal Phelps have talked to the teachers, asked for their inputs. There was also suggestions of extending the Trimester over Spring Break but after the ten days break, no one would remember what they have learned. The final plan is to end Trimester two the Friday before Spring Break. “As for the Finals, teachers can take out questions pertain to the test.”

The cold and harsh weather this winter would hopefully heat up a bit soon. Everyone should still keep warm, dress warmly and watch for any updates of any school closings.
