Blaine’s Secret Treasure

Blaine’s Secret Treasure

Blaine High School has a secret treasure that many people might not know about. This secret treasure is and was involved with education, politics, and even comedy. Blaine’s secret treasure is Gordy Rutman.

Gordy was a teacher at Blaine for 33 years, and is now retired and for the last four years has been a substitute teacher, a coach for the speech team, and a comedian.

In 2007/2008 Gordy found out that Al Franken was going to run for Senate. Gordy grew up with Al, and was also a fan of his comedic career on Saturday Night Live along with books he wrote. Gordy and his wife then threw along with other couples a fundraiser for Al’s campaign. From their Gordy got to know Al better, and worked with him to help get him elected.

Gordy said, “He believes in everything I believe in.”

As a progressive liberal, Gordy did not like how the other side was dealing with education, and he definitely did not like them making it a competition between private and public schools. Gordy said, “As a teacher you know, I believed that the other side…was not helping students, and they weren’t helping other teachers get the job done.”

Gordy was a delegate as a representative of Al Franken. When President Obama visited Minnesota for government election for Mark Dayton, Gordy was able to sit in the VIP section. As Obama was coming on stage Gordy shook the president’s hand.

Besides being involved with politics, Gordy was and still is involved with standup comedy. Gordy has appeared in the club Acme, and Mall of America’s Knuckle Heads. He has also traveled to 21 states, Canada, and even Las Vegas performing standup!

Gordy had a couple gigs over the summer, has no plans right now, but will take the opportunity if one pops up.

Gordy doesn’t necessarily write all of his jokes down. He said he’s “… never been a good writer.” He mostly makes fun of himself, family, and even Blaine. Gordy says, “What’s not to make fun of?”

Gordy is still involved with politics by helping Obama’s campaign staff in Minnesota. “I really really hope President Obama gets re-elected.”

These days Gordy can be seen around Blaine High School subbing, and coaching speech.
