Blaine at St. Cloud
April 25, 2018
April 5th, 59 Blaine students from all grades trekked 60 miles up to St. Cloud State University for their 51st annual Math Competition.
They each got exactly one hour for their exams before they were set free to explore the campus. SCSU set up multiple stations and activities for competition participants, ranging from a presentation about possible life on other planets in their observatory, and playing chess in the library. The real excitement came later, when they all met up once again later that afternoon for the awards ceremony.
SCSU awarded those who scored in the top ten percent, the top five, and the top three overall finishers for each grade.
Blaine students did particularly well this year, bringing home 8 awards for their school.
Mrs. Dorsing, who organizes the Blaine students for the competition, says, “I think that all the kids who went to the competition did an amazing job. The fact that we consistently take 60-70 students every year to go to a math competitions speaks volumes about the excitement and dedication the students at BHS have for math and for being the best they can possibly be.”
Out of 134 10th Graders who competed:
Sam Burns place in the top 5% for Sophomores,
Ryan McGregor placed 2nd with one one question missed,
And Jarod Pivovar placed 1st, with a perfect score.
There, combined scores won Blaine 1st place in the 10th grade division out of 18 total schools that participated.
From a total of 106 11th graders competing from 19 different schools:
Ann Pham, Josh Pagano, and Jarod Kafka, all placed in the top 10%,
And Ethan Zmuda placed in the top 5%.
These combined scores earned Blaine a 3rd place in the 11th grade division.
From 12th Grade:
Christian Heck placed 9th among the 12th graders and was awarded a scholarship from the math department. He intends to attend SCSU next year.
Congratulations to our winners and a special thanks to all who participated and represented Blaine High School!
