Every year, the Blaine High School chapter of National Honor Society (NHS) hosts a food drive. The leaders of NHS at Blaine are Mrs. Wewers and Mrs. Montgomery. Together, they orchestrate major NHS events like their “Trick-or-Treat” food drive.
This year, there are approximately 270 NHS candidates and members. Each student affiliated with NHS is required to bring at least 75 food items. According to Mrs. Wewers, the food drop off dates are Wednesday, October 1st, and Thursday, October 2nd from 2:30 to 4:00. All sophomores and juniors with last names beginning with A-L are to drop off their food items after school on Wednesday. Juniors with last names beginning with M-Z and all seniors are to drop off their food items on Thursday. The food donated by NHS students goes to Tiger Takeout, our school’s in-house food shelf. When Tiger Takeout fills up, the remainder of the food goes to Southern Anoka Community Assistance food shelf.

Food items NHS is looking for include:

-Boxed snacks (granola bars, cereal, etc)
-Boxed dinner (mac-n-cheese, hamburger helper, etc)
-Canned soups, fruits, and vegetables

Due to the low price and demand for Ramen noodles, they count as 0.5 items.

Unfortunately, the NHS food drive is only open to NHS affiliated students. But you can still help by donating to our student service club, Bengals in Action, during their “We-Scare-Hunger” food drive. Their goal is 4,000 food items, so be sure to help struggling local families by donating whatever you can spare!
