The Blaine High School Math Team won their fifth and final meet on Monday, February 13, capping off an undefeated season and making it to state for the second straight year.

For those of you who don’t know, Math Team is a club open to all students.  Math Team meets consist of four individual tests and one team test.  Each individual test covers a specific topic (i.e. geometry), and each student gets to take two of them.  Before the meet, each team decides on eight students who will take the team test and whose scores will count for the school’s point total.  The other students still get to take the tests, but their scores don’t count towards the team total.  The most points you can get on an individual test is 7, and the most you can get on the team test is 24.  The team with the most points wins.

This year, Blaine won each of their conference meets, as well as the conference overall.  Elk River came in second and Maple Grove came in third.  In addition to winning the conference as a team, the Bengals fared well in the conference individually.  Freshmen Ryan MacGregor and Jarod Pivovar took first and second place, respectively, and sophomore Ann Pham took third.  Along with those three, four other Bengals placed in the top 15.

The team is coached by Mrs. Dorsing and Mrs. Garmen.  In an interview, Mrs. Dorsing said that the team’s keys to success this year were “great teamwork, everyone helping each other learn, and amazing underclassmen”.  She added that taking first place in every meet was “mind-blowing” and that this was “the best team I have ever had”.

The state tournament will be held on Monday, March 13, at South St. Paul High School.  Anyone who is easily entertained is invited to come out and support.
