School Food: Then and Now

We often complain in school because of it’s lunches. They may be disgusting, possibly frozen for 20 years, or not even real food at all. But just 10 years ago, the food in school might “scare” you. After you come to the realization of what I’m about to inform you on, you’re mind might change about our school lunches, you might even appreciate them.

First off, school food hasn’t always been like how it is now. Even as far back to our parents’ generation, school food was vastly different. When I asked my father what he ate everyday in school, he answered “I had a slice of pizza and a chocolate shake”. As you can infer already, school food was “unhealthy” to say the least. A chocolate shake is unheard of in our generation, today it’s all low calorie drinks and reduced fat milk. I know for a fact that I wouldn’t be okay with having a chocolate shake everyday. I would get fat most likely.

Kids today often don’t even eat, and at such a crucial time in the development of the body, we need to be eating. no matter how much we dislike it. Believe it or not but it’s actually healthy and for long-term you will be glad that you ate that and not some unhealthy stuff like our parents ate. Something that affects our mentality about obesity is that we all think that it won’t happen to us. The risks to unhealthy food are huge, cancer, obesity, depression.

The idea for “healthier school lunches” was brought up and embraced by first lady Michelle Obama. It proposed lower calorie meals for all of our nation’s schools. People often blame her for having gross tasting lunches. at the idea of this proposal, families were appalled that Michelle Obama would approve the idea of serving healthier lunches to their kids, as if making the children “healthier” was a crime and a constitutional violation.

If you look at school lunches from an economical viewpoint, then you’ll learn that it costs a lot more money to serve fresh food, so pretty much all schools in the U.S. serve processed foods. these school districts are still losing millions of dollars however when food is wasted and thrown away, even in some parts of the country, that “garbage food” is being turned into food to feed pigs.

There’s no denying that food back in the day tasted a lot better. But at some point you have to ask yourself is unhealthy food worth it for your body? Would you rather have that 500-700 calorie meal everyday consisting of pizza and a chocolate shake? I already know some of you would say yes. But that is one of the reasons why America has so many fat people. We need to get better, and you know that you’re the only one that can control your own body…

School food throughout the 70s, 80s, 90s and early 2000s was very unhealthy and probably taught young people their eating habits. I am personally happy that our school food is healthier now, not just for myself but the other students who also eat healthy as well…
