An Inside Look on A Teachers Outside Life

It is often believed, by most students that teachers don’t have lives outside of school. Getting closer to the end of the year, some students start to wonder what teachers do for their three month vacation. Would you believe that some teachers go to cabins, use go-pros and wakeboard? We talked to one of the more popular teachers at Blaine, Mr. Thiesen, and asked him what he does during his summers off.

To start off we asked him if he enjoys having his summers off. He told us “It’s the best because you are able to go from 100-0 and you can slow life down to be on your own schedule.” Mr.  Thiesen really loves the fact that he doesn’t have to be on his crazy busy schedule between coaching football in the fall, which starts on August 10th, baseball in the spring and teaching throughout the year. It takes a lot of time out of a teacher’s life to coach all of the teams and clubs here at Blaine.

Theisen plans on spending a lot of his summer at the cabin wakeboarding. He “potentially” will be going to Alaska to visit family and try to fly fishing (maybe). Also has plans to go up to Duluth for Juba’s (another chemistry teacher at Blaine, also Theisens roommate)  wedding coming up. Theisen says he will be disappointed if he doesn’t find himself on a spontaneous trip during the summer. His time not spent going on trips is spent on the golf course, wakeboarding at the lake or working at the state fair with parents at the BallPark Cafe, which they own.

So what do teachers think about students thinking that they have no life outside the classroom? Well Thiesen is not offended. “I think it’s kind of funny when students really do realize that teachers are real people.” He definitely looks forward to coming back to school in the fall though , especially after being away from a structured schedule all summer. He says “Football really gets me back into the mood of being at school and being on a schedule”.  He would like to add simply “YOLO” as a side comment to teachers having a life, especially in the summer.

Mr. Theisen does a great job of displaying that teachers actually have lives and they actually do fun and exciting things in their free-time. Contrary to popular belief teachers at Blaine High School aren’t just robots that shut down at the end of the school day and wake up when students arrive the next morning. While you are enjoying the beach and going on vacations during the summer, so are teachers. Shocker huh?
