Powder Puff Match

Last Monday, September 15th, 2014, the annual girls powder puff football game took place in Bengal Stadium. This is always a fun experience and huge competition for both the senior and junior girls, and their equal age coaches. The juniors, in red, came prepared to the game both confident yet a little timid. The senior girls, in blue, came ready to take control and whoop the juniors. Most would agree that each year the seniors tend to have somewhat of an edge over the juniors, for they had done the fancy plays the year before. Many fans came out to watch and support the girls onFullSizeRender (1) this nice, fall evening as well.

For the most part at BHS, girls do not really ever play football. Both the seniors and the juniors had many practices before the big game. The girls all learned plays and signals that were definitely not easy to remember. Junior Ashley Osbeck who plays both hockey and lacrosse said, “We’ve always had little plays and things to remember for the sports I play, but nothing as complicated as these silly football plays.” Most of the girls on the teams were athletes from many sports at Blaine including soccer, basketball, hockey, lacrosse, the danceline, and more.

The big match up began at 7 p.m. sharp on Monday evening. Both teams warmed up and got prepared before the game and seemed ready to go. Anxiousness and somewhat nerves crept upon the junior team. The seniors were pumped up and wanted to destroy the juniors…

Game time.

The juniors scored the first touchdown, right off the bat from the first kickoff, making the score 6 to 0. They also got their extra point as well. From that the seniors scored and also received their extra point, making and the game was tied once again at 7 to 7. The game consisted of angry  young coaches making their debuts, to penalties and flags and girls becoming feisty at both the opposite team, coaches, and the refs.  Throughout the whole game the score bounced back and forth and both teams had times of struggle and success. During the last few minutes of the game, the seniors pulled together and ended up scorIMG_1354ing another touchdown to make the final score, 30 to 24.

The seniors were ecstatic to win fair and square this year, since they had won last year but the score had been rigged. Joyful excitement and celebrations came quickly after the win. The blue team was overjoyed and seemed to have never been more proud to pull together and come out with the win. FullSizeRender

Both teams had plenty of fun and enjoyed the intense competition the game brought. Senior coach Sam Zrust said “The junior girls gave it their all and don’t get me wrong, they were pretty good. But obviously the seniors are better.” There was plenty of friendly rivalry happening on Monday night, but this is a tradition for our school and both the juniors and the seniors seem to really enjoy it.
