The Host Movie Review

“The Host” is a science fiction movie based on Stephenie Meyer’s novel of the same name.

Right, Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight saga. So what should one expect from this movie? More weird vampires, more werewolves, more love?

Maybe.

Though “The Host” takes place in a different world, author Stephanie Meyer, has lot of similarities between this story and her hit series, Twilight.

“The Host” takes place in the future, on planet earth. But planet earth has changed: It has been invaded by aliens that occupy human bodies and overtake society. Those aliens, called souls, are very peaceful creatures and their only aim is to end all war and destruction on earth. The humans who find out about these occurrences start to resist and try to hide. But the souls are already in control of 99.9% of all humans, so it gets really hard for the remaining people to survive.

Melanie Stryder, who’s on the run with her younger brother Jamie, meets Jared, another survivor, and they live together as a small family. Shortly after though, Melanie gets trapped and tries to kill herself to escape from being used as a host. The very advanced technologies of the souls make it possible to rescue her life and to actually implant a soul into her body. Due to the fact that Melanie knew what was going on and that she actively tries to fight it, she remains in her body. That means from now on, there are two souls who have to share one body – something that had never happened before. The new soul in her body, Wanderer, is not pleased at all about that. First she’s scared, but after a while the two young women get used to each other and become friends. Finally, Melanie can convince Wanderer to search for Jamie and Jared. So they make their way out into the desert, where they expect them to be…

Since I read the book in 2009, I was looking forward to see this movie. Especially after all the Twilight movies, I was thrilled to see how this one would look like. And I was not disappointed. Even though the first couple minutes into the movie feel very weird and artificial, as if it lacked authenticity. But once you somehow get over the fact how uniform everything looks, and you really start to get to know the characters, it is a great movie.

The fascinating science fiction world on one side and the heartbreaking love story on the other one are a great mix together. And different than the book, the movie even has some action to it, so there’s something for everybody!

(Except for vampire fans. You guys better stick with Twilight!)

Enjoy the movie!
