War of the Sheens. Apocalypse Now vs Platoon

War of the Sheens. Apocalypse Now vs Platoon

In this reveiw I will compare the performances of this father and son duo in two different Vietnam war movies. Martin Sheen in Apocalypse Now and Charlie Sheen in Platoon. We will also explore how each character affected the mood of their movie,

In Apocalypse Now, Martin Sheen is a commander that starts to wonder why he is still in Vietnam and what the true purpose of their involvement is. He is then sent on a mission to find a missing SAS agent that went rouge and bring him in. Martin’s character recruits a couple other guys and they head down a huge river that goes through Vietcong territory. They encounter many twists and turns which brings many phsycological challenges for the group of men. You start to sense a detachment between Sheen and the other soldiers. Very strange in the aspect of what happens in this one misson. Sheen seems to keep chasing the reason of why throughout the whole movie. Somewhat emotional for me but not by much.

Platoon is a totally different story. The movie follows Charlie Sheens character through his tour in Vietnam. It has quite a bit more action and more of a bond forms between the platoon of men. Wherever he goes it’s always the same objective. Hold your position at any cost. It shows what gets talked about in history class, with the officers getting killed and just the brotherhood that is created by these complete strangers.

Personally, I would put my money on Charlie and Platoon. It’s more of what you expect from a Vietnam movie, and it is more straightforward than Apocalypse Now. You can easily get lost in the details of Apocalypse Now and you forget the main points of the movie. It is way more fun and entertaining. Yet I would add both movies to my collection. Hope you enjoy watching!
