Red Dawn: 1984 vs. 2012

Red Dawn: 1984 vs. 2012

Lets take a look at the film Red Dawn, and compare the 1984 and 2012 movie about the American spirit.

Red Dawn(1984): Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell, Lea Thompson, Charlie Sheen, and Darren Dalton.

Red Dawn (1984) is a movie about a group of high school kids that see their hometown get invaded by enemy forces andthe start of a World War III. With their little town being the central command for the invaders, the teens decide to take matters into their own hands and bring on a guerrilla warfare that shakes the enemy’s will to fight.

In the 1984 version, the action starts within the first five minutes of the movie. Sure the weapons are old fashion and most of it looks really bad, but at the time this was new technology. Red Dawn(1984) follows the fighters through out the fall that they were attacked, into the spring that the final ones are let free. It goes month by month and flip flops constantly between the band of heroes and the villains. Some parts of the movie are choppy, you are left wondering: Where they got some of the weapons? What happens to some of the other characters? What happens with the rest of the World War III?

Red Dawn (2012): Chris Hemsworth, Josh Peck, Josh Hutcherson, Adrianne Palicki, and Connor Cruise.

In the recent 2012 version, the movie gives a background to the story instead of plunging us headfirst into the battle. Showing us certain circumstances the characters are in, stuff like that. There are a lot of similar scenes from the original- from popping out of foxholes in the first encounter with the enemy to drinking deer blood. Yet there are also drastic differences- the teenagers battle against North Korea and Russia, the weapons and graphics are better, and there is more strategy involved behind attacking the enemy. Red Dawn (2012) has more of a serious tone to the action and desperation of the people.

My favorite is the 2012 version. looks like something straight out of Call of Duty. Red Dawn (2012) also does a better job showing the underdog mentality than the ’84 version and more believable. The weapons used show more accurate fighting of this day and age. Red Dawn (2012) had more emotion that the 84′ Red Dawn seemed to be lacking. Red Dawn (2012) was a good movie that shows that people can rise against the odds and bring hope to others. Hope you enjoy watching!
