The Great Gatsby” – many of us come in contact with this book during our high school career, whether we read it in our english class or have it recommended to us by our local librarian. Luckily, or unluckily (depending on how you see it) I didn’t. So I had no expectations when I was watching the movie. I didn’t know what it was about, what the historical background was or the author’s intention – I was just watching a movie. And I have to say that I really liked it.
The director does a really good job at letting the audience enter a different world. A world with exclusive parties and wild dresses, alcohol and cigarettes, pretty girls and suspicious business men. And in this world, you get introduced to the story of Jay Gatsby – a man who works his entire life to find and win back the only woman he ever loved: Daisy. But there’s some trouble for the two of them: Gatsby had to leave Daisy to make money for their future life. Although, Daisy was tired of waiting. Daisy marries another man, who is rich and can afford the lavish lifestyle she always wanted. So years later, when they finally meet again, Daisy has to make a decision: The life she was dreaming of, hoping for, waiting for, with her lover Gatsby? Or the life she has been living for the past few years, with her husband, her family?
This movie is different than what you usually get to see. It is bigger, more intense, and grander. The dialogues make you wanna grin, the music makes you wanna dance, the ending makes you wanna cry. And even though the movie plays in a different era, the current music which is part of the movie, makes it easier to get a feeling for it. It’s for sure worth to see this movie, especially if you read the book and really need a different perspective on it than the one your English teacher told you about!
