Art’s colorful role in Kendahl Chergosky’s life~

Art is synonymous with culture, emotions and life itself. Not many people can say they honestly believe that. However, Kendahl Chergosky believes so. She is one of Blaine’s many artists who has shown her talent and love for art through the creation of art club, participation in the art community, and constant practice.
Despite the fact Blaine high school has it’s fair share of artists, Blaine didn’t always have an art club. In fact, I’m willing to wager some of you didn’t even realize it exists. The club would not have even existed without its creator, Kendahl Chergosky. Though a petition she was able to make it possible. Unfortunately, Art club used to meet throughout the month but it is on“indefinite leave because of the teacher contract renewal deal.” Various Blaine students who have a hankering for creative expression met and relished in the company of those who have an apt to create. Kendahl is one of them. But even as art club is on a temporary hiatus, this three year AP art student does not put a hold on her artistic ability.
She draws any chance she gets, even if it is during class time. Her countless sketchbooks reflect her constant practice to perfect her style. She mostly draws with a myriad of pens but also occasionally dabbles in paint. She views art as more than just something to look at. In an interview she said “There is a way for people to pass on how they view life, love, or happiness, or pain…Art is totally transcendental and crosses many cultural boundaries…I really like the word catharsis, which is usually used to refer to emotional closure…that’s how I would describe making things.” Clearly, art plays an immense role in her world and she believes it should play a larger role in everyone elses. That is one of the reasons why she created art club in the first place. She wanted art club to be a place with a relaxed atmosphere. Additionally she said “We started art club so that students could have a comfortable space to use art supplies as they pleased as well as trying new and different art supplies and new crafts like bookmaking and printmaking.”
To her art is more than just a pretty picture, it guides us and is even therapeutic. Sometimes she keeps her art to herself and lets it live quietly within the pages of her sketch book. Other times she sets it free. Occasionally it is shared with another person or published on to the internet for the entire world to see. Soon enough all of Blaine high school will have an opportunity to view her art. Kendahl is one of the few who will be participating in the senior art show towards the end of the school year. Even while the fate of art club is unknown, Kendahl’s commitment to the arts is not.
