A few weeks ago there was a debate going on in the English department about next year’s English classes for juniors and seniors.
It has been decided that for 11th grade English there will only be regular or AP (Advanced Placement) classes to choose from.
And for seniors there will only be regular English or CIS (College in Schools) classes to choose from.
“The goal is to provide a positive learning experience for our students and to prepare them for wherever they go after graduation,” said Steve Slavik, Teaching and Learning Specialist for High School English Language Arts. Even though adapting to the new classes will be complicated, Slavik believes that it will help the students in where they will go in the future and prepare them well.
“I believe that everyone in this department shows up each day to do this work because they care about what’s best for students. For that reason, it’s important for us to recognize how difficult these changes will be.” said Slavik. He also said that class discussions should be focused on facts, rationale and the students.
There are various opinions going on about the change of class options, but Steve Slavik hopes that these classes will prepare juniors and seniors for their future and that it can be done.
