The Sound
October 14, 2016
Do you hear it?
Thud-shhh Thud-shhh Thud-shhh
The noise is all around us. It is in our phones, the lunchroom, and the classroom. The sound is international, too. It can be heard on every continent.
Thud-shhh Thud-shhh Thud-shhh
The mere perception of the sound by the adult ear causes adult blood pressures to rise. The adults’ eyes narrow, looking for unregulated and unsupervised fun to be killed. Their minds turn into hyper drive, instantly coming up with punishments that the makers of the sound will have to face. Their vocal cords surge with fresh, oxygen-laden blood, ready to yell, scream, and complain about the sound.
Thud-shhh Thud-shhh Thud-shhh
The sound is not the vibration of a cellphone, or the playing of a loud Vine. It is the result of this generation’s greatest physics phenomenon. A phenomenon that would require multiple classroom’s worth of chalkboards, a year’s supply of fine chalk, and a curly haired foreign physics professor to explain.
Thud-shhh Thud-shhh Thud-shhh
The creation of the sound is a feat of human ingenuity. The sound has been created out of nothing, brought from the depths of banality into the pantheon of greatness. The sound is human, yet of purely mechanical creation. Without the creator, the sound ceases to exist, yet the sound elevates the existence of the creator.
Thud-shhh Thud-shhh Thud-shhh
The sound is the result of a game of fate; one that can cause utter joy and deep despair in its creator. The sound is one of perseverance. Its creator continues creating it over and over again until they hear the sound at its right pitch. A pitch of perfect stillness and efficiency. One without another thud after the shhh. Just thud-shhh. The creator keeps at it like an artist, striving for perfection until the sequence in their head expresses itself in reality.
Thud-shhh Thud-shhh Thud-shhh
The creation of the sound isn’t without technicality. The creator’s acts with precision and accuracy. The creator, like a supercomputer, learns from their mistakes and adjusts the variables in their next attempt. The creator analyzes, adjusts for, and optimizes. Nothing will be unaccounted for. The sound must be perfect.
Thud-shhh Thud-shhh Thud-shhh
The creator doesn’t stop at creating the sound just once, or twice. There is never satisfaction. More variables must be added. The sound must be amplified. It must be sped up. It must be repeated. It must be unique. There is never an end. Someone else out there has a better sound, so the creator must think louder. The creator must seize the means of sound creation. The creator must own the sound.
