As of recent releases 2012, the best and worst pop bands are Real Friends and Man Overboard.

The emo/pop punk band called Real Friends solidified

Man Overboard.

their image as one of Illinois’s top punk bands with the release of their digital album, Everyone That Dragged You Here. Real Friends came together in Chicago in 2010. They began playing and singing songs written by different artists/bands. They soon started to write and record their own music. The band just finished their first Midwestern tour, a stop including the Coffee Beat House in Minneapolis.

Real Friends has a way of touching the deepest parts of a person’s heart. Their lyrics are relatable to all ages and genders. Their lyrics talk about life, love, tragedy, loss, and lessons. Their music is full of passion, frustration, and honesty. It’s raw and to me and that’s the best part.

The members of Real Friends are what make the band what it is. The band consists of: Kyle (bass), Dave (guitar), Dan (vocalist), Brian (drums), and Eric (guitar). They constantly interact with their fans via Tumblr, Facebook, and Instagram. Their personalities are witty and quirky. From my conversations with the boys, they’re the most down to earth and easy to talk to.

Man Overboard originated in New Jersey in 2008. Even though I have been a fan of theirs for a long time, Man Overboard’s self entitled album is a disappointment.

They’re definitely great musicians, but this year has been letdown. Their music has been predictable, and the tracks forgettable. For example the song ‘Picture perfect’ has a nice melody but the lyrics are typical. Nothing about it compares to their other memorable tracks. Their albums have become overwhelming repeats.

In my opinion, they have a limited audience, people who love to love or to hear about love. Zac, the lead vocalist, is definitely not the worst singer, but his voice is not something pleasing to the ears in the recent album. It does not fit well with the music.

Real Friends do an excellent job focusing on all topics in life. When it comes to pop punk, Real Friends create the most passionate and raw music I’ve listened to.
